Description
Our sweet, lovable, smiling Dixie is a 2 to 3 year old 60 lb. Black Lab. Her former owner kept her tied to a short chain and fed her scraps. A neighbor often brought food for Dixie, but when the dog became pregnant and was about to have her pups, the neighbor asked for help. Early in September of 2005, Dixie was surrendered to PAWS and brought into a foster home. She settled into a large outdoor kennel, free from the chain that had restricted her for so long. A dogloo and soft blanket, toys, treats, nourishing food, fresh clean water and caregivers to walk and comfort her. Within a few weeks, Dixie had her pups 10 of them! All seemed healthy and began to grow. Dixie had been malnourished before delivery and was also a high positive for heartworms. The pups put a strain on her and at 6 weeks one pup died and three others suddenly began to fail. Bottle feeding was prescribed, but the pups faded. For a few weeks the remaining six did well until one became suddenly ill, was rushed to the vet and diagnosed with Parvo, a highly contagious, difficult and costly to treat, often fatal disease. For this pup, it was too late. We watched the others and before long, first one then another came down with the disease. Only the pup named Polly would not become ill. After weeks of treatment, three pups recovered. All have been adopted and are doing well. Dixie then went for blood work and x-rays and 30 days of prednisone before beginning heartworm treatment. She had a difficult time , but has fully recovered and is now awaiting a home of her own. Please call Peg at 843-688-4414 if you have room in your home and heart for this wonderful girl!
